Artist Residencies: Embedding an artist in a rural community

Molly Johnston is the Rural Program Manager for Springboard for the Arts, a community and economic development organizations for artists based in St. Paul and Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Through her work at Springboard, Molly has been part of launching and managing programs including their nationally recognized artist in residence program, Hinge Arts, a community development and artist residency program in Fergus Falls which activates cultural programming at or related to the historic Fergus Falls State Hospital, or the “Kirkbride Building.” An artist herself, dance has taken Molly to Philadelphia (BFA, Modern Dance Performance), Eugene, OR (MFA, Dance), and back to rural Minnesota where she has been encouraging her community to gather through her work with DanceBARN Collective, the Fergus Falls School of Dance, the Lakes Area Community Center and more. Molly has presented about rural arts engagement at conferences including National Dance Education Organization, Rural Women’s Summit, Women in Dance Leadership, and the Rural Arts and Culture Summit, but loves coming home to enjoy nature and small-town life with her husband and two wild sons.
