Elyse Peters

Former Director of Walker County Health Action Partnership

Exploring Nature, Renewing Communities

Elyse Peters is a partnership enthusiast who fosters collaboration across community sectors in order to improve health outcomes in Walker County, Alabama. As an innovative and authentic communicator, Elyse works with low-resource communities to establish a vision, create connections and build local leadership capacity to advance the quality of life of their community. Since 2016, Elyse had led a cross-sector team of state and local governments, nonprofits, and private foundations to create a 31-mile blueway to initiate the Walker County Waterways initiative, creating 4 new access points and improving 3 existing ones. In 2019, she was selected as an Emerging Trail Leader by American Trails for her work to expand outdoor recreation opportunities. A 4th generation Roll-Tider, Elyse graduated from the University of Alabama’s New College with a depth study in Environmental Justice and Civic Engagement. Currently, Elyse has returned to the Capstone to pursue a Master’s degree in Management through the Manderson Graduate School of Business. Her work through the RERC has inspired her to delve deeper into the intersection of outdoor recreation, rural economic development, and social entrepreneurship.
