Derek Lumsden

A Living Downtown: Contemplating the Transition from CBD to DBC

Involved in downtown economic development and historic preservation initiatives for over 10 years, Derek Lumsden is currently an Economic Development Director in rural Iowa. He has earned two Master of Arts from Seton Hall University in Corporate & Public Communications and Diplomacy & International Relations and is one of the few professionals in the Midwest that have successfully completed the Main Street America Revitalization Professional (MSARP) certification from the National Main Street Center and the Historic Real Estate Finance Professional (HDREFP) Certification from the National Development Council. He has also notably served on the Enhance Iowa Board, a statewide board dedicated to improving quality of life and supporting local “placemaking” through grant initiatives. Having served diverse communities throughout the state of Iowa, including several affiliated with Main Street Iowa, he is able to draw on more than a decade of experience revitalizing historic downtowns and shares his passion with audiences during speaking engagements across the country. Derek is dedicated to helping communities capitalize by finding innovative solutions to local issues with the use of strong strategic planning, a strong volunteer cultivation program, and by finding alternative revenue streams to complete local priorities.
